Antibacterial Medications
Antibacterial medications are commonly used for bacterial infections such as fin rot, columnaris, and popeye. Active ingredients include erythromycin, tetracycline, and kanamycin. These are antibiotics — resistance concerns apply to aquarium use just as in human medicine, so always follow manufacturer dosing guidelines.
Antifungal Medications
Antifungal medications are used for fungal infections such as saprolegniasis (cotton-mouth fungus). API Melafix is a commonly available antibacterial/antifungal treatment containing tea tree oil. API PimaFix is a botanical antifungal alternative. Note that some keepers report tea tree oil products may irritate labyrinth organ fish (bettas, gouramis) — use with caution and observe the fish closely after application.
Anti-Parasitic Medications
Anti-parasitic medications treat external parasites like ich, velvet, and anchor worms. Common ingredients include malachite green, formalin, copper sulfate, and praziquantel. Copper is toxic to invertebrates — it must not be used in tanks containing shrimp, snails, or other invertebrates. API Fin & Body Cure is a commonly used anti-parasitic treatment. Always dose in a hospital tank when invertebrates are present.
Aquarium Salt (Non-Medicated Option)
Aquarium salt (sodium chloride) is the most commonly reached-for treatment by beginners — it’s used as a general tonic, mild anti-parasitic, and stress reducer. API Aquarium Salt at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons is a typical short-term concentration. Not all fish tolerate salt — corydoras, loaches, and scaleless fish are sensitive. Salt doesn’t evaporate; it’s removed only through water changes.
Safety Considerations
Dosage and Overdose Risks
Overdosing is the most common medication error. More medication doesn’t mean faster recovery — overdose can damage gills, kidneys, and the nervous system. Calculate dosage based on actual water volume, subtracting displacement from decor, substrate, and hardscape. Always dose the full tank volume, not a partial amount. Follow the manufacturer label — if the label says 1 packet per 10 gallons, don’t add 2 packets hoping for faster results.
Impact on Beneficial Bacteria
Antibacterial medications are generally not selective — they kill the nitrifying bacteria in your bio-filter along with pathogenic bacteria. When the biological filtration crashes, ammonia and nitrite levels spike rapidly. This can kill fish faster than the original infection.
Mitigation strategies:
- Treat in a separate hospital tank (the preferred approach for medication safety)
- If medicating the main tank: remove filter media and store it in treated water during treatment
- After treatment: monitor ammonia and nitrite daily, perform 10-15% water changes to dilute spikes
- Consider adding a bacteria supplement (Seachem Stability or FritzZyme) after treatment ends

Impact on Aquarium Plants
Most antibiotics can damage or kill live plants. Copper-based medications are particularly toxic. MelaFix and PimaFix are generally plant-safe due to their botanical ingredients. Aquarium salt is tolerated by most plants at treatment concentrations, though sensitive species like cryptocoryne may melt. When uncertain, treat in a hospital tank without plants.
Impact on Invertebrates
Shrimp, snails, and other invertebrates are highly sensitive to copper, malachite green, formalin, and most anti-parasitic medications. The Quarantine Tank: Your First Line of Defense
A quarantine (hospital) tank isolates sick fish, protects healthy tank mates, allows precise dosing in a small volume, and prevents medication damage to the main tank’s bio-filter, plants, and invertebrates.
